Keeping it in the Family – Growing up with parents who misuse alcohol (11th April 2008)
Alcohol Concern and The Princess Royal Trust for Carers have published a new report highlighting the negative effect that parents' chronic drinking can have on their children's well being. The report estimates that approximately one million children live with a parent who is dependent on drink.

COMMISSIONING

Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) Commissioning Toolkit (10th April 2008)
The Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme has one principal aim - to help PCTs implement NICE Guidelines for people suffering from depression and anxiety disorders. The Government is committed to improving access to psychological therapies and announced additional funding to increase services over the next three years. This Commissioning Toolkit is designed to help PCTs improve or establish stepped care psychological therapies following NICE guidelines. The toolkit is structured around the commissioning cycle and is specifically linked to the World Class Commissioning competencies. It brings together a wide range of existing tools and guides and includes positive practice examples throughout.

A Department of Health response to the consultation paper A code of practice for the use of powers to counter NHS fraud and security incidents (9th April 2008)
Response to a consultation which sought comments on a draft Code of Practice setting out the requirements that NHS CFSMS counter fraud or security management specialists should follow when obtaining, handling, using and disclosing information obtained through the use of powers contained in the NHS Act 2006 and NHS (Wales) Act 2006.

The national education and competence framework for advanced critical care practitioners (8th April 2008)
This document has been compiled in conjunction with representatives from The British Association of Critical Care Nurses, The Intensive Care Society, The Intercollegiate Board for Training in Intensive Care Medicine and The Royal College of Nursing Critical Care Forum. The document describes: the role of an advanced critical care practitioner; how the role should function within the critical care team; the benefits of introducing the role in clinical practice; a national framework of education and competence for the role within recognised standards of practice.

Residents’ views of new forms of high density affordable living (11th April 2008)

New forms of high-density, affordable housing are often advocated as a response to current policy concerns related to housing shortages, containing suburban sprawl, and the desire to promote an ‘urban renaissance’ in some cities. This study explored residents’ views about living in new affordable higher density housing and how far residents’ expectations of living in high-density developments were met.

Enhancing Quality Promoting Consultant Expansion Across the NHS (9th April 2008)
Many more hospital consultants are needed across the UK to maintain and improve the quality of care in the NHS, the BMA says in a new report published today. The report cites a number of recent influential publications that show a clear link between consultant care and quality, and which demonstrate a need for more consultants in order to ensure patients receive the best possible care.

Hepatitis B – Entecavir: appraisal consultation document (9th April 2008)
The Department of Health has asked the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE or the Institute) to conduct a single technology appraisal (STA) of entecavir for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and provide guidance on its use to the NHS in England and Wales. The Appraisal Committee has had its first meeting to consider both the evidence submitted by the manufacturer and the views put forward by non-manufacturer consultees and commentators, and by the clinical specialist and patient expert representatives nominated for this appraisal by non-manufacturer consultees and commentators. The Committee has developed preliminary recommendations on the use of entecavir for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B. Closing date for comments is 30th April 2008.

The Impact of Benefit and Tax Uprating on Incomes and Poverty (9th April 2008)
Each year, the Government decides how much to raise benefits and tax allowances. The basis for these upratings is rarely debated, yet has major long-term consequences for the relative living standards of different groups and for public finances. This report considers the implications of present uprating policies, which mean that some parts of the tax and benefit system are uprated by earnings growth, other parts by prices and some not at all.

Should Primary Care Trusts be Made More Accountable? A King’s Fund Discussion Paper (10th April 2008)
Local accountability has been a significant policy issue within the NHS generally. However, primary care trusts are in the main accountable to the centre and there have been calls to review this. This paper discusses a range of options for reforming the relationships between PCTs and their public. It explores the question of whether better services and more legitimate decisions will result from better engagement with local people or whether local accountability is an end in itself.
