The Diabetes National Service Framework (NSF) set out the first ever set of national standards for the treatment and care of people with diabetes. The report reviews the development and delivery of diabetes services and identifies the progress made over the past six years towards meeting the Diabetes NSF.

Care recommendation: aspiring treatment in diabetes (22nd October 2009)
The use of antiplatelet agents such as aspirin has been shown to reduce the chance of future cardiovascular events in people who have both diabetes and established cardiovascular disease (includes heart disease, stroke/TIA and peripheral vascular disease). This guidance recommends that people with diabetes who have established cardiovascular disease should be offered aspirin treatment, in addition to following a healthy lifestyle.

International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) Clinical Practice Consensus Guidelines 2009 (September 2009)
The 2009 ISPAD Clinical Practice Consensus Guidelines have now been published as a compendium in a Supplement to Pediatric Diabetes. The guidelines, which have been updated and are available as individual documents include:
  • Definition, epidemiology, diagnosis and classification
  • Monogenic diabetes
  • Management of cystic fibrosis-related diabetes
  • Nutritional management
  • Psychological issues

In this briefing, from the Association of Public Health Observatories, they assess the types of small area data available to analysts and local policy makers across the UK and Ireland, reflecting, as much as possible, the differences between the constituent nations. A range of analytical and presentational methods that may be used and some of the analytical issues that may be encountered are described.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centre for Public Health have produced a series of eight briefings. The series summarises the evidence for interventions to prevent interpersonal and self-directed violence, providing clear directions for how violence prevention funders, policy makers and programme implementers can boost the impact of their violence prevention efforts.

ARTICLE - Identifying primary care patients at risk for future diabetes and cardiovascular disease using electronic health records (22nd September 2009)
Prevention of diabetes and coronary heart disease (CHD) is possible but identification of at-risk patients for targeting interventions is a challenge in primary care. This study looked at the electronic health record (EHR) data for 122,715 patients from 12 primary care practices. After excluding patients with diabetes/CHD at baseline 78,293 patients were eligible for analysis.

Diabetes support literature specifically designed for different age groups (11th August 2009)
BD Medical - Diabetes Care, a unit of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), announced today the full UK availability of its new patient support literature in versions designed specifically for different age groups.

The guides clearly and simply describe best practice for blood sampling and self-injection of insulin using language and imagery appropriate for each age group: children; teenagers; adults and older patients.

National Diabetes Audit 2007/08 (July 2009)
Sixty per cent of the 1.42 million people with diabetes in England included in the latest National Diabetes Audit do not receive all the care recommended for their condition.

The fifth national audit, carried out by The NHS Information Centre in 2007/08 and funded and commissioned by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP), also shows people with diabetes are more likely to have complications if they live in certain parts of the country or have a more socially deprived background.

Diabetes guide for London (30th March 2009)
Diabetes is a major health issue for London, costing the NHS about £3million per day and affecting more than 350,000 people. Healthcare for London have announced plans to ensure that everyone with diabetes in London receives world class care. The guide sets out a plan to transfor diabetes care in the capital over the next three years, improving the standard of care provided, saving lives and reducing disabilities.

Minding the gap. The provision of psychological support and care for people with diabetes in the UK (April 2009)
According to this report, from Diabetes UK, around 85% of adults with diabetes in the UK lack access to specialist psychological support and care. It forund that only 25% of diabetes services can name and supply contact details for people who provide specialist psychological care.

Growing up with Diabetes: children and young people with diabetes in England (8th April 2009)
The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) has found that almost 23,000 children and young people have diabetes in England - a figure higher than previous estimates. This snapshot survey gives accurate numbers of children and young people under the age of 18 with diabetes of any type in England.

The National Service Framework (NSF) for Diabetes. Five Years on…are we half way there? (23rd April 2008)
In 2003, the National Service Framework (NSF) for Diabetes set out a vision for diabetes services in England to be delivered by 2013. Half way through the ten-year plan, the Diabetes UK report reviews the NHS's progress in achieving person-centred, co-ordinated care that aims to ensure fewer people develop diabetes and better care for those who have the condition.
