Technical Briefing 3: Commonly Used Public Health Statistics and their confidence intervals (published March 2008 new to website April 2008)
The third in the series of Association of Public Health Observatories (APHO) Technical Briefings describes the calculation of common types of statistics used within public health intelligence, specifically: rates, proportions, means and age-standardised rates and ratios. We also describe the use of confidence intervals i.e. what they are and when they are used, and present the APHO preferred methods for calculating the intervals for the type of statistics described. A spreadsheet tool is provided to act as a tutorial and give examples of calculating the statistics in Excel.
