CANCER

ARTICLE - European guidelines for quality assurance in breast cancer screening and diagnosis. 4th ed summary document (April 2008)
Development of the European Guidelines for Quality Assurance in Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis has been an initiative within the Europe Against Cancer Programme. The fourth edition of the multidisciplinary guidelines was published in 2006. The multidisciplinary editorial board has prepared a summary document to provide an overview of the fundamental points and principles that should support any quality screening or diagnostic service.

COMMUNITIES

Displacement of Crime or Diffusion of Benefit: Evidence from the New Deal for Communities Programme (7th April 2008)
The Government has assisted deprived neighbourhoods through the New Deal for Communities (NDC) Programme, launched in 1998. It is designed to encourage delivery of local services in a coordinated way to meet local needs, and aims to narrow the gap between these 39 areas and the rest of the country. NDC activity is subject to detailed evaluation. This report is based on analysis of crime data in NDCs and their immediate surrounding areas, to find out what effect crime patterns within NDC have had on crime (e.g. increases or decreases) in surrounding areas.

It is designed to encourage delivery of local services in a coordinated way to meet local needs, and aims to narrow the gap between these 39 areas and the rest of the country. NDC activity is subject to detailed evaluation. This report presents the findings on interventions and outcomes under the theme of crime and community safety.

Challenges, Interventions and Change: An overview of Neighbourhood Renewal in six New Deal for Communities areas (7th April 2008)

The Government has assisted deprived neighbourhoods through the New Deal for Communities (NDC) Programme, launched in 1998. It is designed to encourage delivery of local services in a coordinated way to meet local needs, and aims to narrow the gap between these 39 areas and the rest of the country. NDC activity is subject to detailed evaluation. This report presents the findings of the second phase of this, and gives an overview, based on case studies in six NDCs on the strategies, interventions and outcomes. The aim is to understand why and how changes at the local level have occurred.

Fair Play: A Consultation on the play strategy (3rd April 2008)
Play is fundamental to the successful development of every child - encouraging creativity, teaching children to learn about risk, helping with their physical development and raising self-confidence. This consultation document sets out how Government departments propose to work together and with partners to create more and better opportunities for all children to play, building on the framework and investment laid out in the Children's Plan. Closing date for comments is 18th July 2008.

Younger drug users assessed by Drug Interventions Programme (DIP) teams in non-intensive areas; characteristics and implications for service delivery (2nd April 2008)
This report examines the characteristics of clients assessed by DIP teams in 31 non-intensive D(A)AT areas across England in 2006/7. It focuses upon significant differences between clients under 25 and their older counterparts. The implications for service delivery are discussed.

This report, from Age Concern, accompanies the launch of their new Campaign “The Price of No Advice”. The report shows older people’s lives can greatly improve with support from information and advice services, however, these services are under funded/having their funding cut, just as the demand for their services is increasing.

Good practice guidance for the providers of social networking and other user interactive services 2008 (4th April 2008)
The first UK Social Networking Guidance provides advice for industry, parents and children about how to stay safe online. This has been developed by a taskforce of representatives from industry, charity and law enforcement agencies including Vodafone, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

HEALTHCARE COMMISSION

Spotlight on Complaints (7th April 2008)
The Healthcare Commission is urging NHS trusts to learn from patients’ complaints and improve complaints handling, with key proposals including apologising more often when they do make mistakes. A report published today shows that complaints about a lack of basic nursing care, poor communications, overly brisk GP consultations and a lack of help for mental health service users are among the key issues patients raise.

Summary of trusts rated “weak” for quality of services (8th April 2008)
In January and February this year, the Healthcare Commission held follow-up meetings with the trusts that had scored “weak” for quality of services under the 2006/2007 annual health check. This is a summary of the feedback from the meetings with these trusts.

National NHS Staff Survey 2007 (9th April 2007)
The Healthcare Commission today (Tuesday) publishes results from the annual survey of NHS staff, one of the largest staff surveys in the world. Between October and December last year, a proportionate sample of staff were asked for their views and experiences of working for the NHS in England. Surveys were returned by 155,922 employees from all 391 NHS trusts– a response rate of 54%.

Model Standards 2008 for Caravan Sites in England: Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act 1960 – Section 5 (4th April 2008)
The Model Standards represent what is normally to be expected as a matter of good practice on caravan sites. They should be applied with due regard to the particular circumstances of the relevant site, including its physical character, any relevant services, facilities or other amenities that are available within or in the locality of the site and other applicable conditions.

Transient loss of consciousness in adults: Scope consultation (3rd April 2008)
NICE have been asked to develop a clinical practice guideline on the Management of Transient Loss of Consciousness in Adults for use in the NHS in England and Wales. The draft scope defines what aspects of care the guideline will cover and to whom it will apply. Registered stakeholders for this guideline are invited to submit comments on the scope and may suggest clinical questions that could be answered in the guideline. Closing date for comments is 1st May 2008.

Osteoporosis – secondary prevention including strontium ranelate: Appraisal consultation document (4th April 2008)
The Department of Health and the Welsh Assembly Government have asked the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE or the Institute) to conduct an appraisal of alendronate, etidronate, risedronate, raloxifene, strontium ranelate and teriparatide for the secondary prevention of osteoporotic fragility fractures in postmenopausal women and provide guidance on their use to the NHS in England and Wales. The Appraisal Committee has had its first meeting following the publication of the appeal decision in December 2007 to consider both the new evidence presented and comments put forward by consultees and commentators. The Committee has developed preliminary recommendations on the use of alendronate, etidronate, risedronate, raloxifene, strontium ranelate and teriparatide for the secondary prevention of osteoporotic fragility fractures in postmenopausal women. Closing date for comments is 23rd April 2008.

Pharmacy in England: building on strengths – delivering the future (3rd April 2008)
This White Paper sets out a vision for building on the strengths of pharmacy, using that capacity and capability to deliver further improvements in pharmaceutical services over the coming years as part of an overall strategy to ensure safe, effective, fairer and more personalised patient care. It includes the Government’s response to the Review of NHS Pharmaceutical Contractual Arrangements conducted by Anne Galbraith, former chair of the Prescription Pricing Authority, which the Government commissioned in 2007 (published below). It also considers as appropriate views put forward by the All Party Pharmacy Group’s report The Future of Pharmacy (published in 2007) and considers the complementary but important work of dispensing doctors and appliance contractors.

North West Children and Young People’s Health Indicators (3rd April 2008)
This report shows the picture of the health of 1.7 million children and young people in the North West by comparing the health and wellbeing of under-18s in local areas across the region against 50 different indicators. It is published alongside an online health profiler tool at www.nwph.net/cayphi which will enable local authorities, the NHS and other local agencies to use these indicators at a district level to identify and tackle their own local issues.

The Health Impact of Climate Change: promoting sustainable communities – guidance document (7th April 2008)
The South East Regional Public Heath Group has produced this guidance document for the DH. It contains advice for public health professionals on what can be done to mitigate and adapt to climate change and promote sustainable communities. This has been a collaborative effort with the UK Public Health Association (UKPHA), Faculty of Public Health and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), as well as the content verified across government. The guidance documents ask health professionals to consider the health impacts of climate change and provide information on how societies can adapt to the most severe impacts - such as heatwaves and flooding, with adequate planning. Ideas for minimising the future effects of climate change by reducing energy use and CO2 emissions, both in the workplace and at home are also provided

Driving service improvement through patient focus: report of the Phase II Renal Action Learning Sets 2006-2007 and supporting information (7th April 2008)
Following the success of the first renal action learning sets, the Department of Health commissioned a second phase of this programme comprising six sets which ran from October 2006 to October 2007. These sets focussed on three areas of service improvement using action learning: the pre-dialysis year; transition from paediatric to adult services and acute renal failure. The final report covers the methods used by the sets, and the learning that they gained over the year. It is supported by a pack of detailed supporting information. When downloading and upzipping the supporting information document, please keep the documents in the same grouping as provided. Do not move the location of the main file entitled ‘NHS RALS Supporting Info.pdf’ or the linked PDF files within the folder entitled ‘support’, as this will disable the functional external links to these files within the main PDF document.
