Injection Drug Use and Related Risk Behaviors (29th October 2009)Combined 2006 to 2008 data, from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, indicate that an annual average of 425,000 persons aged 12 or older (0.17 percent) used a needle to inject heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, or other stimulants during the past year. 13.0 percent of past year injection drug users had used a needle that they knew or suspected someone else had used before them the last time they used a needle to inject drugs, and less than one third (29.0 percent) of them cleaned the needle with bleach prior to their last injection. More than one half (52.8 percent) of past year injection drug users purchased the last needle they used from a pharmacy, and 12.4 percent obtained the needle through a needle exchange program.

The report included the following highlights:- The energy efficiency of the housing stock has steadily improved from 42 SAP points in 1996 to 50 in 2007.
- In 2007, 41 per cent of homes were in the more efficient Energy Efficient Rating Bands A-D compared with only 19 per cent of homes in 1996. The proportion of homes in the least energy efficient Bands F and G nearly halved over this period (from 36 per cent to 19 per cent).
- Social sector homes were more energy efficient with a SAP rating of 58 compared with 48 for the private sector and the rate of energy efficiency improvement since 1996 has been greater in the social sector.

National Poisons Information Service - Annual Report 2008/09 (10th September 2009)In 2008/9, NPIS received more than 625,000 poisons-related telephone and online enquiries from health care professionals - up 19% from 2007/8. There were in excess of 570,000 online enquiries, up 20%. NPIS has encouraged the use of online enquiries as a first point of call for information while its telephone service is devoted to more complex cases. More than 57,000 telephone enquiries were answered in 2008/09, an increase of around 9%.

Information The safer management of controlled drugs - Annual Report 2008 (27th August 2009)The Care Quality Commission (CQC) today (Thursday) published a report detailing significant progress in implementing regulations introduced in response to the Shipman Inquiry, to monitor controlled drugs.
The Shipman Inquiry found that ineffective monitoring had allowed Dr Harold Shipman to obtain large quantities of diamorphine, which he used to kill at least 15 and possibly up to 200 patients.
The Controlled Drugs (Supervision of Management and Use) Regulations 2006 were introduced in January 2007. This is the second report on implementation of the regulations and covers progress made during 2008.

End of life care strategy: first annual report (14th July 2009)In July 2008 the Department of Health published the End of life care strategy - promoting high quality care for all adults at the end of life. This report sets out progress over the first year.
Annual Report The National Suicide Prevention Annual Report of progress in 2008 (10th July 2009)The report highlights progress made on a number of specific initiatives during 2008 as well as outlining some key issues for 2009. The suicide rate continues to fall and is now the lowest rate on record. In addition, there has bee a further fall in the rate of suicide amongst young men under the age of 35. There has also been a further reduction in suicides amongst mental health in-patients and in prisons. We cannot afford to be complacent however. Previously periods of high unemployment or severe economic problems have had an adverse effect on the mental health of the population and have been associated with higher rates of suicide. PCTs and other front-line agencies are aware of the situation and continue to identify and support vulnerable individuals wha are at risk.
