HIV AND AIDS

HIV in the United Kingdom: 2009 Report (27th November 2009)
The number of people living with HIV in the UK continues to rise, with an estimated 83,000 infected at the end of 2008, of whom over a quarter (27%) were unaware of their infection.

During 2008, there were 7,298 new diagnoses of HIV in the UK. This represents a slight decline on previous years, predominantly due to fewer diagnoses among black African women who acquired their infection abroad.

2009 AIDS epidemic update (24th November 2009)
According to new data in the 2009 AIDS epidemic update, new HIV infections have been reduced by 17% over the past eight years. Since 2001, when the United Nations Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS was signed, the number of new infections in sub-Saharan Africa is approximately 15% lower, which is about 400,000 fewer infections in 2008. In East Asia new HIV infections declined by nearly 25% and in South and South East Asia by 10% in the same time period. In Eastern Europe, after a dramatic increase in new infections among injecting drug users, the epidemic has leveled off considerably. However, in some countries there are signs that new HIV infections are rising again.

NURSING

Competences: an integrated career and competence framework for nurses working with HIV-associated lipoatrophy in adults (12th June 2009)
Facial lipoatrophy can be devastating for those affected. It can influence an individual’s sense of wellbeing, perception of body image and self-esteem. This in turn can increase anxiety levels, particularly when addressing the complexities of HIV-associated facial lipoatrophy. The role of the nurse is essential, not only in administering the corrective treatment, but also assisting patients in dealing with the psychosocial effects of facial lipoatrophy and implementing the appropriate actions. This document aims to provide a framework for nurses working in HIV-related medical aesthetics and, while not prescriptive, can be used as a template to guide clinical practice.

New Guidelines for HIV testing and areas where wider HIV testing policies should be considered (18th September 2008)

New guidelines from the British HIV Association (BHIVA), the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) and the British Infection Society (BIS) aiming to increase the offer of HIV testing to ensure fewer people go undiagnosed have been welcomed by the Health Protection Agency. The guidelines recommend that wider HIV testing should be considered in those areas of the country where the numbers of undiagnosed infections are likely to be greatest. To assist planning by Trusts, the Health Protection Agency is releasing information from its HIV surveillance systems showing those places where undiagnosed infections are concentrated.
