Tuberculosis in the UK: Annual report on tuberculosis surveillance in the UK 2009 (2nd December 2009)
In 2008 in the UK, 8,655 cases of tuberculosis were reported, a rate of 14.1 per 100,000 population. This represents an increase of 2.2% in the rate of disease compared with 2007.

The main burden of disease was concentrated in major urban areas; 39% of cases were reported from London, a rate of 44.3 cases per 100,000. Nineteen primary care organisations had a rate of 40 per 100,000 or over, all of which covered major urban areas.

Food route: a journey through food (10th August 2009)
'Food route: a journey through food' is a range of colourful age-appropriate resources designed and developed to enable young people to gain food-related skills and knowledge.

Informed by young people themselves, and their teachers, the resources bring the Food Standard Agency's food competences to life.

New online learning tool launched to help kids protect themselves from infections (3rd September 2009)
School children across England and Europe can now learn about protecting themselves from swine flu and other infections, following today's launch of an education programme and interactive website by the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

e-Bug is made up of educational activities for primary and secondary school-age children, complemented by online games, on microbes, hygiene, antibiotic use and vaccines. The programme features age-appropriate animated characters and cartoon microbes; and lesson plans and materials for teachers. Topics include hygiene measures to stop the spread of swine flu and other respiratory infections.

Clostridium difficile infections continue to fall (16th April 2009)
Latest figures, released by the Health Protection Agency, show that cases of the healthcare associated infection Clostridium difficile are continuing to fall.

Template Patient Leaflets on MRSA Screening (16th April 2009)
The NHS is now screening all relevant patients for MRSA before planned operations. This will help the NHS reduce the chances of patients getting an MRSA infection or passing MRSA onto another patient. These template patient leaflets have been developed to assist local areas in their patient communications around this topic.

The Protection of Children in England: A progress report (12th March 2009)
This document, and its recommendations by Lord Laming, are aimed at making sure that good practice becomes standard practice in every service. This includes recommendations on improving the inspection of safeguarding services and the quality of Serious Case Reviews as well as recommendations on improving the help and support children receive when they are at risk of harm.

The document aims to: evaluate the good practice that has been developed since the publication of the report of the Independent Statutory Inquiry following the death of Victoria Climbié; identify the barriers that are now preventing good practice becoming standard practice; and recommend actions to be taken to make systematic improvements in safeguarding children across the country.

A Children's Environment and Health Strategy for the UK (24th March 2009)
The Health Protection Agency today publishes a Strategy to improve the health and well-being of children in the United Kingdom by changing the environment in which they live. The Agency was commissioned to write the report by the Department of Health.

HEALTH PROTECTION

High Dose Radiation Effects and Tissue Injury RCE 10 (19th March 2009)
A report reviewing the effects of high doses of radiation on human health has been published by an independent expert Advisory Group to the Health Protection Agency. The report, at the request of the Department of Health, also addresses specific issues concerning the medical management of radiation accidents and incidents.

The report makes several recommendation on how the UK could improve the dianosis of radiation damaged patients, the treatment of patients suffering the physical and psychological effects of a radiation incident, as well as the future training needs of clinicians.

HEALTH PROTECTION

Increase in Meningococcal type B infections in England (23rd January 2009)
The Health Protection Agency reported that there has been an increase in meningococcal group B (MenB) infections in late December 2008 and early January of this years for England. There have been 252 cases of MenB reported in the last four weeks in December and first two weeks of January compared to 198 for the same period the year before.
