Emergency planning: development of an integrated plan for the management of blood shortages (25th November 2009)
This paper updates the integrated plan for blood shortages released in 2004 and the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) external document ESD/PCS/HL/001/012 released in January 2005. The original plan was prepared by the Chief Medical Officers National Blood Transfusion Committees (NBTC) subgroup on contingency planning, and lists actions to be taken by both NHSBT, then the National Blood Service, and hospitals in the event of a potential or actual red cell shortage.

This paper provides estimates of the risk of secondary variant Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (vCJD) infections for patients receiving a high number of blood transfusions.

This paper is as originally presented to the CJD Incidents Panel on 19 January 2006 except for the addition of a disclaimer and a more recent reference. It is placed here for wider reference.

Government response to Lord Archer's Independent report on NHS supplied contaminated blood and blood products (16th June 2009)
This document sets out the Government's response to the report and recommendations of Lord Archer's independent inquiry, published on 23 February 2009. The inquiry examined the events of the 1970s and early 1980s, which resulted in the infection of many patients with HIV and/or hepatitis C through NHS treatment with blood and blood products.
